Kiel Canal

We entered the Kiel Canal in the early hours of the morning and I was asleep! I did however get up at 7am, and went on deck to see the 'sights'. Nothing very interesting. It was all farmland, with acres and acres of those awful electricity generating windmills on top of the 'hills'. I call them hills, but really just land slightly higher than the surrounding area. There were wooded areas, but not many. In parts there was a rather strong 'cow dung' odour too:(

We passed a few little villages and where roads crossed the canal there were little open decked foot and car ferries for the crossing. We saw quite few going backwards and forwards, with maybe one or two cars on at the most and a handful of pedestrians. I suppose it was early morning. We also passed a number of ships, mainly cargo vessels going in the opposite direction. Everyone on the decks of both ships always waved to one another, as did anyone on the banks of the canal, which tended to have a small farm track along one or both sides for most of the route I saw.

By the time we had had breakfast we were tying up at Brunsbüttel, with a cargo vessel going the other way in the lock alongside. There wasn't a lot to watch and it only took about 30minutes before we were on our way again towards Dover. It was pretty rough out in the North Sea for a few hours over midday. I spent a long time just watching the other ships through the binoculars. It was like the M25 of the sea. Ships going south in a long line one after the other, and the same going north.

There were plenty of activities onboard for the day and of course our bags had to be packed for disembarking tomorrow. They had to be left outside the cabin door between 10pm and 2am. What a pity I hadn't used the launderette! All the dirty washing to do when I get home:( After the rest had gone to bed and all was packed, I spent the rest of the evening in the Pipers bar again talking to Margaret and Jim, a couple sitting on the next table to us at dinner times. A really nice couple whom I met most evenings at sometime, for a drink and chat.
