Braemar in Gudvangen

Norwegian Flag

Gudvangen - 27 Aug 2001
My photo album of Gudvangen

The short trip through the fjord, waterfalls everywhere, was beautiful, past tiny hamlets completely isolated, farms clinging to the mountainside and cut off completely in winter, just a pity it drizzled all day. Beverley and I sat in the Braemar Lounge watching the scenery. Gudvangen is in Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord arm in Europe! We had to tender here. The tenders were a bit smelly with the diesel fumes. Those going off on tours left first and then the rest of us. We had to collect a ticket and wait our turn which wasn't long.

Gudvangen is a beautiful little village with a population of 120. The Gudvangen Fjord Hotel is built in Viking style, has a restaurant with a "Viking menu" and a souvenir shop. There was one other souvenir shop and that's it.

Beverley and I walked all around the village and espied what we thought was the back of another shop in the distance across a little bridge over the Nærøy River. This turned out to be the back of a petrol station, which had a grocery store and cheap ground coffee! Overall prices of goods in Norway were very much on par, and cheaper in some cases, than the UK. It used to be very much more exoensive, but not so at present.

The coaches returning with those who had been on tours arrived all together causing a mass stampede for the tenders. A bit of a queue formed so we just waited around. The crew had brought over a table and urns of coffee and orange, with an umbrella. It was amusing, but a nice touch while waiting [which wasn't long anyway]. There wasn't anywhere one could have bought a quick cup of coffee in Gudvangen.

The weather was cool but bright during most of the afternoon with a little drizzle. About 55º and changeable. We were all supposed to have been back on board by 5.15pm but the last tender wasn't back until about 5.50pm. We did however sail just after 6pm as scheduled.
